Between 2005 and 2007 Bernadette spent two years working for the national charity Flora Locale, covering the North of England. During this time she cultivated a passion for native wild flowers and traditionally managed hay meadows. The two often go hand in hand with many native wild plants being found in traditional hay meadows.

Many of Britain's native wild flowers and traditionally managed hay meadows are increasingly rare to find, having suffered devastating losses due to changes in land management, in particular since World War 2. Indeed many grasslands and the flowers they support have their own Biodiversity Action Plan.

To conserve both hay meadows and native wild flowers we must protect those we have, but we also need to create new grasslands and restore old hay meadows or fragments of grassland that remain.

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that wild flower meadows are wild and therefore require no management. Unfortunately this could not be further from the truth. However, once you know what is required management can be straightforward and the results quite breathtaking. Bernadette Lobo
